I have just read a delightful book called “School Psychologists: From Surviving to Thriving” by Louise J. Privette, Ed.D. – a great book! I was born in 1924, and the word psychologist had never been used. We had a small country school in Oklahoma, and one teacher taught 8 grades—about 4 to 6 students in each grade. The students sat at small desks in rows. As a teacher taught each group—all the others worked on their assignments. No one was disruptive. However, as years passed serious behavioral and mood disorders became evident and a new word was invented “therapist” followed by “school counselors” and finally “psychologists”. What a wonderful time for students!! No one realized the job these people did to help teachers help their students. I am so grateful to read this book written by the many psychologists of today. It opens our minds to the many problems certain students face today. I really believe that every parent and teacher (not just the professional psychologist) should read this book. It will open our eyes to the excellent help that is available today.
