Historical Fiction - The Rain Crow
Julie Weathers, like most writers, has always loved creating stories. When she couldn’t get to the library, she started writing her own. However, it wasn’t until she was grown with children that she considered writing again — and that happened purely by accident after she won a $10,000 horse that turned out to be worth $500. The editor of a magazine she wrote to about the contest offered her a job, which lasted twenty-three years, writing race and human interest stories.
Julie has been a horse wrangler in Arizona and a babysitter (for horses, not people) on a premier racing Quarter Horse farm in Texas. Training young horses was her favorite job, though she’s also been a lady bronc rider, an award-winning real estate agent, a reach forklift driver, and — at times — someone who scrubbed floors and took in ironing. She’s experienced life in all its ups and downs, including feeding cattle with a team of horses in forty-below weather.
Her greatest accomplishment is being a mother, but finishing The Rain Crow feels pretty darn good, too. Of all the challenges she’s faced, feeding cows in subzero temperatures was among the toughest — fingers frozen to the reins is no fun — but completing this book ranks right near the top. She hopes readers enjoy The Rain Crow as much as she loved bringing it to life.
