Claire Sorrell

Memoir: It Started with a Cookie

Claire has been a public-school teacher for decades, teaching students from middle school through college-level courses. She currently teaches both honors and regular-level secondary mathematics, where she loves finding creative ways to make math engaging, memorable, and, yes, sometimes even fun! One of her favorite ways to bring mathematics to life is by writing and performing her own math raps and jingles, from individual classrooms to whole-school assemblies. If students are going to have a math song stuck in their heads, it might as well help them remember how to solve an equation!

At the heart of her teaching is a simple belief: education is about much more than delivering information. It is about connecting with students, sparking curiosity, building confidence, and making learning stick. She tries to remember that every student in her classroom is someone’s child and deserves the very best she can give.

Her educational background includes degrees in Biology and Science Education from Florida State University, along with graduate-level coursework in Statistics at Montana State University.

And, just for fun, here’s a sample of one of her math jingles, Solvin’ USA!
